Vitamin K2 is obtained from meat, dairy products, and eggs, and is produced by bacteria. Quite different from plant-based K1 (which helps your blood clot), vitamin K2 is the key to funneling calcium into bones and teeth and making sure calcium deposits dont build up in random (wrong) places. Its called the Calcium Paradox, meaning that adequate calcium, even adequate calcium absorption, does not equate to strong bones. You also need adequate vitamin K2 to get calcium into your bones.
K2 plays an especially vital role in bone deposits up until the age of 20 (the years when the bulk of bone density is determined) and after menopause and andropause (in determining how well your body can hold on to and rebuild bone density).
Many people know that calcium and vitamin D help build bones. What is not so well known is that while vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, it does not tell the body what to do with calcium. Without vitamin K2 directing the show, calcium (from diet or supplements alike) can stray into soft tissues that are more receptive to mineral deposits (think of how easy it is to deposit sand on a beach versus transform it into a concrete postor bones!).
Bone building (versus beach-building) is serious business and requires that calcium force its way into hard bone material. This effort requires vitamin K2, which activates osteocalcin, the friendly usher that takes calcium to the exact right spots inside bones and teeth to make them strong.
Interestingly enough, vitamin K2 also activates another substance called matrix gla protein, which sweeps calcium deposits piled up in the wrong places (like beach sand clogging a stream) and washes them back out to sea, making them available for bones and teeth or for excretion.
Unfortunately, a 2007 study showed that the majority of apparently healthy individuals operate with sub-optimal vitamin K2 status, a kind of invisible nutrient need. Many believe that K2 should now be classified as an essential nutrient, since gut bacteria do not produce enough and modern factory-farmed animal products do not have the same levels of vitamin K2 that they had 100 years ago.
